Left 4 dead 2 budget11/20/2022 (I do agree with the sentiment that marketing this as "from the creators of Left 4 Dead" leaves a bad taste in the mouth, but it's not strictly false.) So whilst seeing the comparison is eye-opening and interesting, it's also not particularly insightful. Ultimately, you're not going to make a Valve game on a sub-Valve budget. Of course there have been advancements in technology that are more readily available, but all these other things aren't free. You still have to do all the motion capture, implement the interaction of ragdolls with the world, and so on. Things like complex physics simulations, advanced ragdolls, large hordes, and scrupulous facial animation weren't just nice-to-haves, they were selling points! And nowadays, these things are not things you can just pick up off the shelf and put into your game. The gaming market was also skewed much more hardcore. These games were released in an era where pushing boundaries was more important - the Xbox 360 is one generation removed from the PS2!. Left 4 Dead was released four years after Half-Life 2. I also think it highlights the disconnect between that era of games and this era of games. Only Valve and first-party publishers like Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft can afford to make games like this. Game devs would love to put in all sorts of polish like this, but they simply don't have the resources, and have to make hard decisions. They also have a great playtesting culture, which isn't easy to setup.
